The Waterford Police K-9 Unit consists of two handler and dog "teams". The initial team, with Officer Lane and K-9 Blitz, has been in service for approximately four years. The next team, with Officer O'Connell and K-9 Atos, has been in service since October 2008. 

Both K-9 units are "cross trained" in that they perfom patrol work (tracking, building searches, biting, etc, as well as narcotics detection. Both K-9 teams are certified through NPWDA - National Police Work Dog Association, and the CPWDA - Connecticut Police Work Dog Association.

Both teams also participate in frequent demonstrations for local schools and businesses.
