The Waterford Police Department Marine Unit is a part-time division, staffed by approximately twenty officers. The department uses a 24' Parker as its main patrol boat. The Marine Division also uses a Sea-Doo RTX wave-runner. Areas which the division patrols include the Niantic River, Niantic Bay, Millstone Power Plant, Jordan Cove, Harkness Park, Waterford and Ocean Beaches and the Thames River. The divisions' mission is to enforce the State of Connecticut boating regulations, conduct random safety inspections, enforcement of martime security zones as established by the U.S.C.G. provide an emergency maritime response when necessary and to conduct security patrols of harbors and local infrastructure. The Unit, which is supervised by Lieutenant David Burton, has routine scheduled deployments but also assists with random scheduled events.
